Pilates (pronounced puh-lah-teez and not pie-lates) is similar to yoga but emphasizes your body’s core — the abdomen, obliques, lower back, inner and outer thigh, gluts and so on. Because it incorporates the major muscle groups Pilates delivers much of what exercisers need — strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, coordination, balance, and good posture — with a much lower chance of injury than with other forms of exercise. The discipline emphasizes correct form instead of going for the burn. With so many exercise variations and progressions, you may have a hard time getting bored with Pilates.
Pilates moves require you to engage virtually your whole body. At times, you may try to strengthen one muscle while stretching another. The moves take lots of concentration; you can’t simply go through the motions like you can on gym equipment. And then, for every move you think you’ve mastered, Pilates has another version that’s a little different and a little harder.
Barre Pilates is an exciting form of Pilates incorporating a ballet barre. In fact, it’s a fusion of Pilates and Ballet, with an element of aerobics and weight training. This means that exercises are mainly done at the barre, complemented by abdominal mat work and back strengthening exercises. As in pure Pilates, one of the aims is to challenge and boost your core stability and balance while employing body weight for resistance in the exercises.

“Change happens through movement and movement heals.” — Joseph Pilates
Developed by Joseph Pilates, a method of exercise that’s designed to strengthen the core through breath and control. Here at VIDA, our Pilates program includes mat classes included in your membership, plus specialised programs that incorporate multiple apparatuses, including the reformer, tower, chair, and Cadillac.
The Pilates method is all about activating, engaging, and breathing through your core and challenging your body’s ability to maintain that tension while your limbs move. Why is this important? Because all strength originates in the core!. Pilates will make you longer and leaner, and the increased pelvic stability and spinal support will also make you a more efficient mover in every aspect of your life. Whether you’re competing in races, weightlifting, dancing, or simply chasing your kids around the yard, Pilates has your back.
